Body Language Alpha Male Style: Posture, Angles and Eyes
The body language alpha male guys use in a set: aligned posture, slow movement, angled stance and eye contact, with drills and fixes for needy tells.

The body language alpha male guys use in a bar doesn’t come from puffing out the chest or glaring at other men. It is a short list of physical habits that signal you are comfortable, unhurried and not seeking approval. Women read those habits before you finish your opener. The seduction community treats this as the foundation of all game. David DeAngelo’s body language seminar slides sum it up in one line: “Without the right body language, everything else is ineffective.” This article lays out the body language alpha male method in full. It covers what to remove, what to adopt, how to angle yourself in a set, and how to train it until you stop thinking about it.
What “Alpha” Means in Body Language
In community vocabulary, the alpha is the dominant, high-status frame in a given social context. He doesn’t seek approval, tests don’t rattle him, and he operates from his own reality. DeAngelo is clear that this doesn’t mean being a jerk or being rich. He reframes alpha as frame control and maturity: the alpha is the guy who takes responsibility for the people around him. His opposite is the AFC (average frustrated chump), the guy who hovers, over-invests and hands women all the power.
Body language alpha male style works in two directions at once.
- Outward, it signals status. Other people read your posture, stillness and orientation as proof of your value before any words land. Teachers put the nonverbal share of communication very high. David Wygant claims 80%. Roger Love ties most of your perceived believability to your stance, breathing, gestures, walk and facial expression. Whatever the exact share, the community agrees your body talks first and loudest.
- Inward, it changes your state. State means your emotional condition in the moment. Physiology and emotion feed each other in a loop. Lift your chest and slow your movement, and your nerves come down with it. The community considers this a faster route to confidence than trying to argue yourself into a better mindset.
This is why Swinggcat insists that feeling confident isn’t enough. If you slouch, avoid eye contact or cross your arms, women read you as unconfident whatever is going on inside. He also treats proper body language as a prerequisite for push-pull (alternating interest and distance), qualifying and frame-setting. Verbal game sits on top of the physical layer, not the other way round.
DeAngelo’s slides list what your body should communicate:
- comfort
- dominance
- security
- status
- indifference
- confidence
- control
- sexual awareness
- a territorial nature
- humor and fun
Keep that list in mind. Every drill below serves one of those messages.
The Body Language Alpha Male Types Use in a Set
The core idea is orientation. Mystery puts it bluntly: when you face someone with your body, you are seeking rapport with them, and “seeking rapport is a low value behavior.” The person who gets faced is the prize. The person doing the facing is chasing.
Picture two groups at a bar. In the first, a guy has squared his shoulders and feet toward the girl he likes and leans in to catch every word. The AFC in the PUA-Routines training does exactly this. In the second group, a guy stands slightly angled and leans back while he tells a story, and everyone in the group has turned toward him. The second man is running body language alpha male style. The first is broadcasting that she holds the power.
The same dynamic applies between men. Suppose another guy is sitting there talking, and you are facing him while he doesn’t look at you. In that moment he has more social value than you. That is why Mystery arranges himself so he isn’t directly facing anyone when he first opens.
The PUA-Routines material frames the goal as being the man everyone else turns toward. He entertains the group, speaks at a volume that carries and is comfortable being the center. The rest of this article covers the mechanics of getting there without looking like you’re trying.

Step One: Strip Out Leakage and Approval-Seeking
Most men building body language alpha male habits try to add good gestures. The community teaches the reverse. Patty Contenta, the dance-trained coach DeAngelo interviewed, works on a “less is more” principle: cut superfluous motion first. DeAngelo’s seven-step method also starts with eliminating bad habits. You become aware of your body all day, not only around women.
The habits that send women running
- Leaning in, also called pecking, which means bobbing your head toward her like a bird
- Stiffness, or the opposite, hunching
- A weak handshake
- Cracking knuckles or licking lips
- Too much or too little eye contact
- Wallflowering, which means standing at the edge of the room holding the wall up
Leakage
Leakage is the community’s term for small nervous tells that betray you even when your smile and eye contact look solid. Common ones are finger-twitching, sleeve-pulling, touching your face and adjusting your collar. You can have a strong opener and still lose the set because your hands told a different story.
When nerves hit, lift your chest, sit or lean back, and stop moving. Stillness reads as security. If approach nerves are the root problem, work on them directly with our guide to approach anxiety.
The drink and the pockets
Hold your drink still, low and away from your chest. Clutched in front of your sternum, it becomes a shield, a barrier you’re hiding behind. Ross Jeffries reads hands jammed in pockets as a submissive “apology” for taking up space.
DeAngelo frames the whole category through approval:
- Cut approval-giving body language, like constant smiling and nodding.
- Eliminate approval-seeking body language, like leaning in and hovering.
- Master approval-keeping, which means staying relaxed once you have her attention.
If approval-seeking runs deeper than posture, our breakdown of how to stop being needy covers the full list of tells.
Posture, Walk and Movement: The Alignment Drills
Once the leakage is gone, build the frame. This is where body language alpha male style becomes a physical skill rather than an attitude. DeAngelo’s slides point out that, unlike inner game, it can be learned fast, the same way you learned to walk.
Patty Contenta’s six alignment cues
These come from ballroom dance, where alignment is everything. In Patty’s words, energy “flows better when your body is properly aligned.”
- Spread your weight evenly across the whole foot, not tipped forward or back.
- Tuck your pelvis slightly.
- Pull your shoulders back so the chest is up.
- Keep your neck straight.
- Pull your chin back further than feels natural.
- Lead the walk from the hips.
For a shortcut, imagine a string attached to your chest pulling you upward. Shoulders, head and spine fall into line on their own.
The hand cue and the stance
DeAngelo teaches a hand cue in his live bar drill. Touch your thumb to your middle finger, relax while keeping contact, and let your hands fall to your sides. Your hands stop fidgeting because they have somewhere to be. Pair it with eye contact you never break first.
Lance, a DeAngelo guest speaker, teaches an asymmetric setup. Stand with your weight on one leg, feet in a loose L-shape, leaning back slightly. When seated, sit asymmetrically, take up space and move slowly. He treats the shoulders as the master lever for tension: drop them and the rest of the body follows.
The walk
Wygant’s line is that nervous walking produces nervous reactions. His drill:
- Study how Clooney, Eastwood and Colin Farrell move on screen.
- Go to a mall, walk up to a woman confidently, smile, say hello and walk away.
- The next day, repeat with different women and add a simple request for help.
- Have a friend critique your walk.
A one-week practice plan
- Days 1-2: Awareness only. Notice every fidget, slouch and face-touch at work, in line and on the phone.
- Days 3-4: Run the string cue and the thumb-to-middle-finger cue every time you stand or walk anywhere.
- Days 5-6: Do Wygant’s mall walk-and-hello on both days.
- Day 7: Film yourself walking and talking, then compare the footage to the six cues.
The point of body language alpha male training is low-stakes reps all day. You want it automatic before you’re in a loud bar with adrenaline running.

Entering, Angling and Opening Up as a Reward
Mystery’s entry protocol
In the body language alpha male toolkit, Mystery’s set mechanics are designed to look spontaneous. Our piece on Mystery and his method covers them in more detail.
- Open with a double-take as you walk past, delivering the opener over your shoulder rather than marching up head-on.
- Don’t fidget in the first moments.
- Keep your feet shoulder-width apart and don’t peck.
- Face the set only after about 30 seconds.
- If the set walks off, don’t follow. Keep talking and lean back.
- In a loud venue, talk louder rather than leaning in.
Neil Strauss adds that hovering over women signals neediness. Stand straight, rock back on your heels and give a time constraint (“I’ve only got a minute, my friends are over there”).
Savoy calls the next step locking in. Within 30 to 60 seconds, get your back to a wall or bar while facing the group. With a seated group, sit down while delivering a false time constraint. Now the group has to turn toward you.
The angle and the reward
Swinggcat learned this one the hard way. He and others once experimented with fully turned backs and owl-like head turns, which “ended up being really weird and creepy.” His conclusion: “you don’t want to slam the door in a woman’s face, but you don’t want to fully accept her either.”
His calibration progression:
- Meet her at a slight angle.
- Build rapport through conversation.
- Open your body toward her as rapport grows, or right after she says something you like.
Going from angled to open makes her feel she earned your attention. DeAngelo’s “make her earn it” step works the same way: lean back and let her orient toward you first. PUA-Routines suggests standing roughly 10 to 15 degrees away. Later, you can playfully turn your back on her to talk to her friend.
Sample interaction (illustration)
You walk past a two-set at the bar, glance back and turn your head: “Quick question, you two look like you’d know this.” You stay angled, weight on one leg, drink low. She answers. You tease her answer and stay put. About 30 seconds in, you square up slightly to the group, then lean against the bar. When she makes a sharp joke, you turn your shoulders fully toward her for the first time and grin: “Okay, that was actually funny.” She steps in closer. Your rotation was the reward.
Calibrate from there. If her torso and feet turn toward you, keep building. If she points her body at the exit and gives clipped answers, she has checked out. Wrap it up warmly and leave. Body language game rests on reading her, and her disinterest ends the interaction.
Face, Eyes and Hands
The face is where body language alpha male style is easiest to fake and easiest to get caught faking. Keep everything slow and slightly understated.
Eye contact
Hold eye contact a split second beyond normal social convention, but don’t stare. Vin DiCarlo observes that men break eye contact with each other quickly, so with women you hold it about two seconds longer than you would with a guy. This contradicts the popular “alphas look away when others speak” rule. Looking away while she talks reads as distracted, not dominant.
Smiles
- A wry, closed “mystery smile” beats a broad, eager grin.
- The sly Brosnan or Willis half-smile defuses a cocky-funny line (arrogant humor delivered with a wink), so it lands as play rather than insult.
- Swinggcat allows any smile that reads confident, smug, snobby or friendly. The nervous “creepy smile” is the one that gets the worst reactions.
- Flash your eyebrows quickly on “hi.”
Gestures
Keep gestures few, slow and purposeful. DiCarlo’s comparison is Bond versus the “weird Italian guy” waving his arms.
Roger Love adds a subtle fix: avoid parallel gestures, where both hands move in identical mirror image. Natural gesture is asymmetric. His drill is to deliver the Gettysburg Address into a mirror and break every mirrored gesture you catch.
Wygant takes a different approach and models Clooney’s animated hands and smile. Relaxed expressiveness also works, as long as it’s deliberate.
For sexual awareness, the community points to subtle self-touch combined with zero fidgeting. When the conversation warms up, physical touch follows its own ladder, always tracking her response. We cover that ladder in kino escalation.
Mirroring and reading her
To build rapport, mirror her posture and gestures with about a 20-second delay. Nod slowly and watch whether she nods back. During escalation, trust her body over her words. If her body says no, it’s no, whatever the conversation is doing. Our guide to female attraction body language covers her signals in depth.
Holding Frame Around Other Men
An AMOG (alpha male of the group) is a man in or near the set competing for status in front of the women. Tyler Durden studied how these men used eye contact and posture to lower other guys’ status, and then built counters to it. Your body is the first counter, and body language alpha male basics carry most of the load.
- Never look threatened. The community holds that acting threatened hands power to the other man. Stay still, stay leaned back and keep your voice level.
- Read him before you choose a tactic. Vin DiCarlo watches the guy’s position, dress and body language, and how the girls react to him. A man who is isolated or staring at his phone can usually be ignored. With a socially strong “player,” approach him first, hold eye contact and let him introduce you.
- Don’t feed blockers. If a guy pokes or interrupts to blow you out, give him nothing. Keep your angle toward the group and build an us-frame with the girl.
DiCarlo describes walking in with so much secure, friendly energy that a weak blocker simply drifts off. Nobody needs to confront him, because the group dynamics do the work.
Common Mistakes and Sticking Points
A sticking point is a recurring place where your game breaks down. These are the ones that show up most often with body language alpha male style.
| Sticking point | What it reads as | The fix |
|---|---|---|
| Fully closed (back turned, owl head) | Creepy, strange | Slight angle, then open up as a reward |
| Fully open from the first second | Eager, no emotional space for her | Start angled, rotate toward her as rapport builds |
| Loud macho posturing | Try-hard, aggressive | Aim for the relaxed “good guy,” not the “nice guy” or the “macho guy” |
| Gripping her hand when hers loosens | Clingy, pushy | Let go and follow her lead |
| Scripting every gesture | Robotic, incongruent | Build awareness until it runs automatically |
| Practicing only at night | Stiff under pressure | Low-stakes reps all day |
The leaning-in exception
Leaning in is generally an approval-seeking tell, with one exception. When you tease her, lean in and point. This adds playful intensity to the push in push-pull. Then lean back out.
Arms and pockets
Schools genuinely disagree here. Some DeAngelo material warns against crossed arms and pockets, while his seminar slides allow either. Swinggcat’s leaned-back “judge” crosses his arms and holds strong eye contact on purpose. The difference is intent: a relaxed, chosen pose works, and a nervous clamp doesn’t.
If she’s the one with crossed arms, a tactic from the 2007 Summit is to playfully pose her (“put this hand on your hip”) to shift her state. Use it only while she’s laughing along.
Body language without the inner frame
Body language alpha male habits stop working once they become a costume over neediness. Posture gets you in the door, but it holds up only when you genuinely don’t need a particular outcome. Pair this physical work with outcome independence. The rest of the Gentleman Savvy journal has more inner game pieces that keep your body and your mind telling the same story.
Swinggcat gives two training tools worth borrowing. First, rewatch Swingers and compare how Trent and Mikey carry themselves. Second, watch couples you can’t hear and judge who’s the prize from posture alone. Within a week you’ll see status everywhere, and you’ll start to see it in your own body too.
Questions men ask
FAQ
How do you know if you're an alpha male?
In the community's sense, alpha is a frame you hold in a given social context, not a permanent type. Check the signals. Do people in the group turn to face you? Can you hold eye contact without breaking first? Do tests and teasing leave you unbothered? Have you stopped seeking approval? If people orient toward you and your body stays relaxed and still under pressure, you are running an alpha frame in that room.
What is a true alpha male?
The seduction community defines a true alpha as the leader of a social context. It has nothing to do with being a jerk, and wealth is not required. David DeAngelo frames it as frame control and maturity. The alpha stays unshaken by tests, takes responsibility for the people around him and operates from his own reality instead of chasing approval. Dominance without warmth reads as the loud macho guy, which the community treats as a mistake.
What is the body language of a guy that likes you?
A man who likes someone usually turns his torso and feet toward her, leans in, holds eye contact longer and mirrors her movements. The community's point is that doing this too early signals you are seeking rapport, which reads as lower value. Skilled men start at a slight angle and open their body toward her only as rapport builds, so the interest feels earned rather than handed over.
Does alpha body language actually attract women?
The community's core view is that attraction isn't a choice. It is an emotional response to certain behaviors, and much of that behavior is nonverbal. Relaxed posture, stillness and comfortable eye contact signal confidence and non-neediness before you speak. Body language won't replace personality or conversation. Teachers treat it as the foundation those other skills rest on, because bad body language makes even good lines fall flat.
Should you cross your arms or put your hands in your pockets?
Teachers disagree. Some material warns against crossed arms and pockets, and Ross Jeffries reads hands in pockets as a submissive apology. Other teaching allows both, and Swinggcat uses crossed arms in a leaned-back 'judge' posture. The rule underneath is the same either way. A relaxed, deliberate pose works. Arms clamped across your chest as a shield, or hands jammed in pockets out of nerves, do not.
Do alpha males look away when others speak to them?
This popular rule misreads how status works. The community teaches holding eye contact a split second beyond normal convention without staring, and never breaking it first. Vin DiCarlo notes men should hold eye contact with women about two seconds longer than they do with other men. Looking away while someone talks reads as rude or distracted. Status comes from comfort and stillness, not from withholding attention.
