David DeAngelo: Double Your Dating and His Core Methods

Who David DeAngelo is, what Double Your Dating teaches, and how to use his cocky-funny, attraction and online messaging methods, with example lines.

David DeAngelo is the name behind Double Your Dating, the e-book that taught a whole generation of men that attraction is something you trigger, not something you earn by being agreeable. If you have ever heard someone say “cocky-funny,” “she’s not choosing to feel it” or “never be the online buddy,” you have heard his influence. This article covers who he is and what his material actually teaches. It also shows how to use the core methods in the field and online, and where men go wrong when they try.

Who Is David DeAngelo?

David DeAngelo is the author of Double Your Dating and the teacher behind a long run of seminars, audio programs and DVD series for men. They cover attraction, conversation, online dating and inner game. One e-book became the reference point for everything that followed: his later programs keep pointing back to it for deeper explanations. Students credit it for their results, and his own material frames it as working like a kind of male initiation.

His position in the community is distinctive. Some teachers built their reputations on night-club demonstrations and routines. David DeAngelo built his on explanation. He wanted men to understand why attraction works the way it does and why nice-guy behavior fails. He also wanted them to understand what a man has to become before his results stop depending on scripts. If you are new to the vocabulary, our primer on what a PUA is and how the method works gives the wider context.

The main programs

  • Double Your Dating (DYD): the foundational e-book. It introduced cocky-funny and his core philosophy, and every later program refers back to it.
  • Advanced Dating Techniques: a program of more than 12 hours that he called his “next level foundation.” It covers the psychology and research behind attraction, body language, communication and online dating.
  • Cocky Comedy: a full program on his signature humor style.
  • Meeting Women Online: a series with guests such as Dave M. and Chet that systematized online messaging.
  • Man Transformation: a program on deep, gradual personal change across physical, emotional and logical domains.
  • On Being a Man Who Naturally Attracts Women: an inner-game-only program on maturing into a “real man” with a life purpose.

What Double Your Dating by David DeAngelo Teaches

Strip Double Your Dating down and you get one premise and three consequences. The premise is that attraction isn’t a choice. A woman does not decide to feel it. It is an automatic emotional and physical response that specific behaviors trigger, usually in the first minutes. Because it bypasses logic, you cannot argue, persuade, gift or nice-guy her into it.

The consequences:

  1. Stop trying to convince her. Pleading your case, listing your good qualities and buying dinner are all attempts to win a logical argument with an emotional system.
  2. Change her mood, not her mind. Emotion, playfulness and tension do the work. Argument does not.
  3. Become the man the response is wired for. Technique triggers attraction in the short term. The “real man” (his archetype of mature masculinity, explained below) sustains it.

DeAngelo ties this to evolution and brain structure. Attraction lives in the older emotional brain, not the reasoning brain, which is why he calls it “anti-logical.” He uses an animal courtship model: a sign stimulus hits an innate mechanism, which produces a pattern of behavior. Hit the right stimulus and the response fires. Make a misstep and interest dies instantly. He points out that the same is true of men: you don’t choose whether a woman excites you either.

The premise cuts both ways. If she doesn’t feel attraction after the first impression, nothing you say will create it. If she does feel it, nothing will talk her out of it. Once you accept that, you stop wasting energy on persuasion and put it into the behaviors that actually work.

Diagram contrasting affection behaviors with attraction behaviors
Affection and attraction run on separate tracks: one never converts into the other.

Attraction vs Affection: The Distinction That Fixes Nice Guys

The most practical idea in the whole David DeAngelo catalogue is that affection and attraction are different systems, and affection never converts into attraction.

  • Affection is friendly liking. It comes from niceness, favors, approval-seeking and predictability, and it ends in “just friends.”
  • Attraction is the lover feeling. It comes from teasing, mystery, self-respect and a healthy indifference to whether she approves of you.

This is why the man who does everything “right” by conventional standards gets friend-zoned. He is stacking affection and waiting for it to become something else, and it won’t. DeAngelo calls this the “supersized friendship strategy.” If that pattern sounds familiar, read our breakdown of nice guy syndrome and the PUA fix and the guide on getting out of the friend zone.

The translation table

DeAngelo doesn’t tell you to become cold. He tells you to swap each affection behavior for its attraction counterpart:

Affection behaviorAttraction counterpart
Buying giftsSurprise romance, once attraction exists
Seeking approvalIndifference to the outcome
Showing offBeing vague, elusive, mysterious
Listening to her problemsTeasing her out of the mood
Doing favorsActing with self-respect
Accepting flaky behaviorHolding high expectations
Changing to please herKeeping your self-confidence

He also sorts behaviors into two columns:

  • What men think should create closeness: similarity, commonality, rapport, compliments and niceness.
  • What actually creates it: emotion, physical play, mystery, challenge, unpredictability and teasing.

Romance isn’t banned. In his framework, romance amplifies attraction that already exists. Used to create attraction from nothing, it reads as needy and formulaic.

The 60-second window

Because attraction fires early, DeAngelo teaches that a woman has largely decided within about a minute whether something could happen. Two habits follow from that.

  1. Walk in with the right frame. Assume she will want to know you. The opener’s exact words matter less than that frame, meaning the underlying reality you project.
  2. Skip the stock topics. Family, school and work are predictable, and the brain tunes out the predictable.

For openers themselves, see our guide on how to approach a woman without freezing.

Cocky-Funny: How David DeAngelo’s Humor Works in Practice

Cocky-funny (DeAngelo also calls it cocky comedy) is humor that mixes arrogance with playful teasing. The key detail is that she laughs and you don’t, or at least not much. That composure signals you aren’t performing for her approval. He contrasts it with an ordinary “sense of humor,” which is about being liked. Cocky-funny is aimed at attraction, and it works especially well in ambiguous or tense moments.

The three moves

  1. The playful tease (bust). Rib her about something specific and harmless, such as her drink, her shoes or her overly serious face. Exaggerate it until it’s obviously a joke.
  2. The cocky reframe. Treat her comments as evidence she’s into you. If she says “You’re too funny,” answer: “I know, please try to control yourself.”
  3. The role reversal. Act like you are the prize she has to qualify for: “You seem cool, but I need to know you’re not one of those girls who...”

A sample interaction (illustration)

Him: “Okay, before I talk to you any further, I need to know: are you a bad influence? Because my friends warned me about you.”
Her: (laughs) “I’m the good one here.”
Him: “That’s exactly what a bad influence would say. Fine. You’re on probation.”
Her: “Probation? You just met me.”
Him: “And already you’re causing problems. Tell me three things about you that are actually interesting. Not your job.”

The structure runs tease, then reversal, then a qualifying question that hands her the job of impressing you. That last step is what turns banter into conversation.

Calibration cues

  • She laughs, leans in and teases back. These are IOIs (indicators of interest). Keep the playful tone and start mixing in genuine questions.
  • She laughs but looks slightly uncertain. Soften with a warm smile or a sincere line, then return to play. This back-and-forth is the push-pull rhythm.
  • She goes flat or defensive. You hit a nerve or overdid it. Drop the teasing entirely and don’t double down.
  • She signals disinterest or says no. The interaction is over. Thank her and leave with good grace.

DeAngelo also warns against explaining the trick. If you break frame to tell her you were “just joking,” you’ve traded attraction for reassurance. Read her reaction instead. Our article on reading IOIs and testing interest covers the signals in depth, and how to talk to women covers how to keep banter flowing.

David DeAngelo’s Online Dating Method

The online material is where the David DeAngelo camp got most systematic. They framed messaging as a slowed-down practice format. It strips away body language and tonality, so your words have to carry the attraction on their own. And the whole point of messaging is to get off messaging.

The stated sequence has four stages:

  1. Get past her “dumbass and loser filters.”
  2. Spark sexual tension.
  3. Amplify it in dialogue.
  4. Get her on the phone and then in person.

Linger in email and you become her online buddy.

The core problem is standing out. Attractive women are flooded with messages, so a generic one disappears, and a long, heartfelt essay reads as desperate. As DeAngelo put it in his lesson on answering a woman’s ad: “Don’t spend hours writing a heartfelt 10-page letter.”

The six-step first email

The formula is taught in the Meeting Women Online series:

  1. Intro: a unique opening, not the copy-paste greeting every other guy sends.
  2. Bust on her profile or photos: tease something specific. In the lesson’s example, a woman shown doing yoga got the line “Gotta love a woman that does Tae Bo.”
  3. About you: a vague, intriguing self-description that hints at confidence and mystery.
  4. About her profile: one specific comment that proves you read it.
  5. Qualify: a question that makes her prove herself to you.
  6. Call to action: tell her exactly what to do next.

The shorter version DeAngelo teaches has three parts. Bust her on something, give her a creative reason to reply (“tell me three things about yourself”), and close with a playful nickname.

What to avoid in the first message

DeAngelo’s checklist for the first message:

  • No physical compliments.
  • No offers to take her out or buy her something.
  • No “we seem perfect for each other because we like all the same things.” That sounds like you’re trying too hard.

If you share an obscure interest and you’re good at it, tease her about it instead by implying she isn’t at your level yet.

The second email and the cap

When she replies, keep the second message short:

  1. Thank her.
  2. Answer any question she asked.
  3. Mention you’re busy and don’t have time to email back and forth.
  4. Ask “What’s your number?”
  5. Sign with your first name.

If she wants to keep chatting instead, ask once more. If she still declines, let it go and move on.

For unanswered messages, DeAngelo’s rule allows three in total. The follow-ups should be impatient and funny, never hurt or needy, and there is never a fourth. The program’s expectations are realistic too: a reply rate of 10 to 20 percent is doing well, so don’t take silence personally.

His camp also preferred the word get-together over “date” for the first meeting, to strip out pressure. The same sequence translates directly to apps and texting, and our guide to flirting over text messages shows how.

The purpose of messaging is to get off messaging as fast as possible.

Beyond Technique: The Real Man and Man Transformation

The later David DeAngelo material turns inward. His recurring archetype is the “real man.” In his telling, when women use that phrase they don’t mean physically tough. They mean a man who:

  • knows who he is,
  • is decisive and composed,
  • holds boundaries and will walk away,
  • doesn’t need female approval,
  • and projects high status without effort.

The cultural version he describes is strong, courageous, stoic, modest and independent, and never whiny, clingy or vain.

This is inner game, meaning the beliefs and emotional state behind your behavior. DeAngelo treats it as a process, not a trick. Man Transformation describes a gradual shift across physical, emotional and logical domains. On Being a Man Who Naturally Attracts Women focuses on life purpose: when you have a direction, attraction shows up without technique.

The payoff he names is the “total ten.” She is a woman beautiful inside and out, emotionally mature and self-aware, who won’t respond to routines because she’s looking for presence and integrity. His argument is that a man who can only run lines can attract her briefly but can’t keep her. Attraction has to be maintained, and he holds that women leave relationships when attraction disappears, whatever reasons they give. Our guide on getting a girlfriend, from opener to commitment picks up from there.

How to train it

  • Practice decisiveness in small things. Pick the venue, the drink and the plan, and own the choice.
  • Hold one boundary a week that you’d normally let slide, whether with friends, at work or with women.
  • Build a path. Pursue a goal for its own sake. That makes outcome independence (not needing any single interaction to go well) real rather than acted.
  • Rehearse walking away. When someone treats you poorly, leave politely and without drama. Every time you do it, your frame gets more congruent.

Common Mistakes When Applying David DeAngelo’s Material

Most failures with this material come from taking one idea too far.

  • Cocky without funny. Arrogance alone is just unpleasant. Make the tease absurd, exaggerated and obviously playful. If you’d be embarrassed to hear it read back, cut it.
  • Funny without cocky. The class clown entertains people and gets filed as a friend. Stay composed while she laughs, and add qualifying questions.
  • Reading “selfish” as a moral rule. DeAngelo notes that refusing to accommodate everything sometimes works. It is not a license to be inconsiderate. The goal is self-respect, not rudeness.
  • Assuming attraction overrides her answers. “Spin her comments as interest” is a banter frame for playful remarks. It never applies to a real no, a cold response or visible discomfort. Those end the interaction or slow it down, full stop.
  • Buying her. Gifts, dinners and favors before attraction exists kill it more reliably than a physical flaw does. Save romance for later.
  • Living in the inbox. Long email threads build a pen pal, not a get-together. Ask for the number by the second exchange.
  • Copy-paste blasting. Obvious templates get ignored or flagged. Use a base template, but add one to three lines that reference something only she wrote.
  • Technique without transformation. Neediness shows through even when you run the right lines. Pair every technique you learn with one inner game habit from the section above.
  • Confusing your attraction with compatibility. The premise applies to you too. Feeling pulled toward someone doesn’t make her a good match, so trust your gut on red flags.

Is David DeAngelo Still Worth Reading?

For the fundamentals, yes. The premise that attraction is triggered rather than negotiated is now standard across the community. Mystery, Neil Strauss and Tyler Durden all adopt some version of it, each with a different emphasis. DeAngelo’s version is still the clearest explanation of why nice-guy strategies fail and what to do instead.

The online material is where it has aged. It was built on email-based dating sites, so translate the logic rather than the literal steps. Short messages, a specific tease, a qualifying question and a fast move to a phone call or meeting still work on apps.

Suggested reading order

  1. Double Your Dating for the premise and cocky-funny.
  2. Cocky Comedy to train the humor until it’s automatic.
  3. Advanced Dating Techniques for the psychology and body language.
  4. Meeting Women Online if you date online.
  5. Man Transformation and On Being a Man Who Naturally Attracts Women once your outer game works but your relationships don’t last.

On the Double Your Dating PDF: the book started life as a downloadable e-book, which is why it’s mostly read on screen. Whatever version you pick up, read it for the premise and the affection-attraction split, then put cocky-funny into practice in real conversations. Reading alone changes nothing.

If you’re building a library, compare it with our guide to Mystery Method books and their reading order. The two schools complement each other: DeAngelo for the why and the inner game, Mystery for structured field sequences. You can browse more breakdowns on the Gentleman Savvy blog, and once the get-together is booked, our first date tips for men take it from there.

FAQ

Who is David DeAngelo?

David DeAngelo is a dating coach and author best known for Double Your Dating, his foundational e-book on meeting and dating women. He popularized cocky-funny humor and the premise that attraction isn't a choice. He then built a catalogue of seminars and programs on top of it, covering advanced attraction psychology, cocky comedy, online dating and inner game for men who want to become what he calls a 'real man.'

What is Double Your Dating about?

Double Your Dating is David DeAngelo's foundational e-book on meeting and dating women. It argues that attraction is an automatic emotional response a woman does not consciously choose, so you trigger it with behavior instead of earning it with niceness. It introduced cocky-funny humor and the split between affection and attraction. It also gives practical advice on approaching, conversation and setting up a low-pressure get-together.

What are David DeAngelo's main programs?

The core is Double Your Dating, the e-book every later program refers back to. Advanced Dating Techniques is the deep dive into attraction psychology, body language and communication. Cocky Comedy trains his humor style. Meeting Women Online systematizes online messaging with guests such as Dave M. and Chet. Man Transformation and On Being a Man Who Naturally Attracts Women cover inner game and life purpose.

Is there a Double Your Dating PDF?

Double Your Dating began as a downloadable e-book, so a digital file has always been its natural format, and that is why PDF versions get passed around. Whichever version you read, focus on the parts that matter most: the premise that attraction isn't a choice, the affection-versus-attraction split, and cocky-funny. Then train them in conversation, because reading alone changes nothing in the field.

What is cocky-funny?

Cocky-funny is David DeAngelo's name for humor that mixes arrogance with playful teasing. You deliver it so she laughs while you stay composed. It signals confidence and shows you don't need her approval, which builds attraction rather than friendly liking. It is never insulting. The target is light, absurd or exaggerated, and you drop it the moment it lands badly.

Is David DeAngelo still worth reading today?

Yes, for the fundamentals. His premise that attraction is triggered rather than negotiated, his affection-versus-attraction distinction and his cocky-funny style still underpin most modern teaching. Some online dating specifics reflect older email-based sites, so translate them to apps. Keep messages short, tease something specific, qualify her and move to a phone call or meeting quickly.
