Mystery: How to Be a Pickup Artist (Book, Show, Method)

Mystery: how to be a pickup artist, decoded. The nine-phase method from his book and VH1 show, how to open a set his way, and the mistakes that stall guys.

Mystery how to be a pickup artist: a man opening a mixed group at a lounge bar

Ask Mystery how to be a pickup artist and you won’t get a magic line. You get a structure: open the group, build attraction, build comfort, then seduce, in that order and never out of it. That spine runs through everything he taught, from the nightclubs Neil Strauss wrote about to the VH1 house to the book on the shelf. Below is what the method actually says, how to run a set his way, where guys stall, and what still holds up now.

Who Is Mystery, and What Do the Book and Show Teach?

Mystery is Erik von Markovik, a former magician who became the best-known face of the seduction community. His stage background shows up in the vocabulary: a “set” (a group of people you approach) is a magician’s word. He ran a classroom-style seminar company called Social Dynamics; two of his instructors, Tyler Durden and Papa, later split off and founded the in-field workshop company Real Social Dynamics.

Most men meet him through one of three doors:

  • The Game. Neil Strauss’s 2005 account of his years in the community, where Mystery is his mentor and housemate at Project Hollywood.
  • The Pick Up Artist on VH1. The 2007 to 2008 reality show where Mystery coached a house of inexperienced guys through weekly field challenges.
  • The books. His method was published as The Mystery Method and later revised as The Pickup Artist: The New and Improved Art of Seduction. Underneath sit his Magic Bullets material and his Routines Book.

Whichever door you came through, if you set out to learn from Mystery how to be a pickup artist, the lesson underneath was the same. Structure first, material second. For the man himself, see our profile of Mystery from The Pickup Artist, and for reading order, our guide to the Mystery Method books.

One vocabulary trap: “mystery” in lowercase is also a community concept, meaning deliberate intrigue (withholding information so she stays curious). That idea feeds into his method, but the capitalized name refers to the teacher.

Structure Before Material: Why Order Matters

The core claim is that courtship follows a predictable sequence, and your job is to know where you are in it. At the top level there are three stages:

  • Attract: raise your value so she notices you and wants more of you.
  • Comfort: build trust, connection and physical ease.
  • Seduce: mutual escalation toward sex.

Each stage has its own beginning, middle and end. The typical span from meeting to sex is 4 to 10 hours of accumulated time together, with roughly 7 hours as the working average. Those hours can be spread across a night out, a phone call, drinks and a later hangout. Strauss lays out the seven hours as an approach, a call, drinks, another call, then time together before bed.

Why does order matter so much? Because the stages depend on each other. David DeAngelo, teaching Mystery’s model, is blunt about it: you never start with Seduction, and you never start with Comfort. You start by building attraction, not by hitting on her and not by rapport-building. A guy who leads with compliments and personal questions is trying to build comfort with a woman who has no reason yet to want it from him.

That is also why Mystery says routines on their own won’t make a beautiful woman fall for you. A head full of openers and stories gets occasional wins. The same material placed inside the Magic Bullets sequence produces consistent results. Anyone asking Mystery how to be a pickup artist got this answer before any lines: learn the map, then plug routines into it.

Strauss distilled Mystery’s Basic Training into four principles that are worth memorizing:

  1. Have a plan. Know what to say and when.
  2. Have a gimmick, or at least a prop. A short performance skips small talk and shows value.
  3. Have stories. Be the entertainer, but leave room for connection.
  4. Treat it all as a game. Play, don’t plead.

After his first real success under Mystery’s coaching, Strauss summed it up: the secret is “simply knowing what to say, and when and how to say it.”

The nine phases: each stage has a beginning, middle and end, and you move forward only on her signals.

Mystery: How to Be a Pickup Artist in Nine Phases

DeAngelo’s breakdown splits the three stages into nine phases. Here is the sequence with what each phase is for and the signal that tells you to move on.

PhaseWhat you’re doingMove on when
1. OpenEngage her whole group, not just herThe group is talking with you, not tolerating you
2. Female-to-male attractionDemonstrate higher value; she becomes interestedIOIs: she asks your name, touches you, seeks your attention
3. Male-to-female interest (qualify)She shows value; you show interest in specific qualities beyond looksShe is qualifying herself to you
4. Comfort 1Rapport, genuine conversation, numberConversation flows both ways, she invests
5. Comfort 2Hand-holding, arm-in-arm, light kinoShe accepts and returns touch
6. Comfort 3Kissing and caressingHours of comfort built, she is clearly into it
7. SeductionBuild arousal in privateMutual escalation
8. Last-minute resistanceSlow down, add comfort, reassureShe is ready on her own terms
9. SexConsummationn/a

Two terms there need defining. An IOI (indicator of interest) is any sign she’s into you: playing with her hair, asking questions, reinitiating when you go quiet. Kino is community shorthand for touch. LMR (last-minute resistance) is hesitation right before sex, and the method treats it as a normal phase handled with time and reassurance. If she says no or pulls away, that is the end, full stop. See our deeper piece on kino escalation for the touch ladder.

The lettered version and its timings

In DeAngelo’s breakdown, the attraction phases carry letters and rough clocks:

  • A1 (5 to 10 seconds): the opener, delivered with active ignorance of the target.
  • A2 (about 3 minutes): you demonstrate higher value with stories and social proof, doing about 90% of the talking.
  • A3 (3 to 8 minutes): she qualifies herself while you show selective interest.
  • C1: you switch off the cocky teasing and build genuine connection. No number before this point.

Underneath runs a compliance loop: show value, wait for IOIs, run a small compliance test (taking her hand, moving her to a seat), then reward her with a bit of your interest. Repeat, and momentum builds.

Mystery also calls the checkpoints waypoints: opening, hook point, kino introduction, qualification, isolation, compliance threshold, time bridge or bounce, LMR and sex. Their real value is diagnostic, which we’ll come back to. Our full phase-by-phase breakdown lives in The Mystery Method by Mystery.

How to Open and Run a Set the Mystery Way

Here is the field mechanics, drawn from Mystery’s own instruction on approaching groups and the 13-step format Strauss recorded.

The approach

  1. Move in instantly. Smile entering the room and approach within about three seconds of spotting the set, before your head talks you out of it.
  2. Open while still walking, over the shoulder. Mystery’s line: “When you open, you’re still walking.” Coming in straight-on feels confrontational to her and telegraphs too much interest.
  3. Stack openers. Have two or three ready so one dead line doesn’t end the set.
  4. Drop a time constraint within 15 seconds. “I can only stay a second, I’ve got my friends here.” It tells the group you won’t camp out, so they relax.
  5. Skip the vagrant’s opener. No “excuse me”, no apology, no asking permission to ask. That kills value before you’ve started.

Inside the set

  1. Game the group, not the target. Focus on the men and the friends first. Win them over.
  2. Shift relative value. Mystery’s logic: she assumes you’re “just the next guy.” Your job is to raise your perceived value through stories, humor, a demonstration or peacocking (a standout piece of clothing that invites comment) while lightly lowering hers with a neg, a playful tease that signals you aren’t dazzled.
  3. Neg once, lightly. The group should laugh, she should smile. If she grabs for your attention too early, a second light tease. Never insults.
  4. Ask how everyone knows each other. If she’s with a boyfriend, gauge it and leave gracefully if needed.
  5. Get permission to isolate. “I’ve sort of been alienating your friend, mind if I steal her for a minute?” Repeat the time constraint when you sit.
  6. Isolate with a kino test. Take her hand as you lead her to a seat. If she comes easily, that’s compliance.
  7. Demonstrate and qualify. A short demonstration, then a qualifying line in the spirit of Mystery’s: “Beauty is common, but what’s rare is a great energy.”
  8. Go quiet. If she fills the silence with a “So...?”, that’s an IOI.
  9. Close. A kiss close (“Would you like to kiss me?”) when her signals are strong, or a number close with a time constraint.

A sample interaction (illustration)

You (walking past, half-turned): “Guys, quick opinion before I head back to my friends. Who’s harder to lie to, your mom or your best friend?”
Friend: “Mom. Always.”
You (to the guy): “See, that’s what I said. You’re obviously the smart one here.”
Target: “I’d say best friend.”
You (grinning, still to the group): “Is she always this contrarian?”
Laughter. You tell a two-minute story to the group. She asks where you’re from.
You: “I’ve been alienating your friend a bit. Mind if I borrow her for two minutes?”

Calibration cues: if she leans in, asks your name or touches your arm, move toward isolation. If the group closes its circle or she turns her shoulders away, wrap up warmly and leave. Our guide to the body language of female attraction covers these signals in detail. This is the practical side of asking Mystery how to be a pickup artist: a repeatable sequence where her reactions decide the next move.

The Inner Game Behind the Method

Critics often painted Mystery’s school as pure outer game: scripts, props, routines. But the material is a delivery system. What makes it land is state (your emotional energy in the moment) and frame (whose reality the interaction runs on). Both get trained through reps.

DeAngelo makes the point that competence breeds confidence, calling it “competent confidence.” The more skilled you become, the more confident you feel, and the two feed each other. He puts a number on the training phase: around 250 approaches. “The club is your dojo,” and every social interaction is practice. Even 15 focused minutes a day, given 100%, compounds into an aha moment months later when you look back and realize it clicked.

Three inner-game habits pair well with the method:

  • Outcome independence. The time constraint and the group-first opening only work if you can genuinely walk away. Our piece on outcome independence explains how to train it.
  • Strong eye contact. David Wygant’s rule: when she smiles at you, hold it. “You always make her break.” If direct eye contact still rattles you early on, voice coach Roger Love’s fallback is to look at her forehead or chin, which still reads as eye contact.
  • Intrigue over disclosure. Strauss’s timing rule: joke or deflect the first time she asks something like where you’re from, then give a real answer by the second or third ask, framed to show value. Endless evasion is not the goal.

Strauss also coached a playful bit of frame control: put her on a point system. “That was great, three points.” “You just lost a point for that.” If she asks what points are for, invent a reward on the spot. It keeps you in the evaluator’s seat without any hostility.

Common Mistakes and Sticking Points

A sticking point is the stage where your interactions keep dying. Mystery’s waypoints make them easy to find: after each night, write down how far every set got. If they all die before isolation, you have an attraction problem, not a closing problem. Here are the usual culprits when guys try to learn from Mystery how to be a pickup artist.

  • Misordering the phases. Escalate hard right after attraction and she feels buyer’s remorse. Sit in comfort too long without escalating and you become “the girlfriend,” headed for LJBF (let’s just be friends). DeAngelo treats about seven hours as a good cutoff point.
  • Moving forward without signals. Don’t shift to comfort until IOIs confirm attraction. Don’t seduce until comfort is real. Her reactions are your green lights.
  • Gaming the target directly. Walking straight up to the hottest woman and ignoring her friends gets you blocked. Win the group, then ask permission to isolate.
  • Apologetic openers. “Sorry to bother you” signals low value instantly.
  • Negging too hard or too late. A neg is a light tease, not a put-down. Once you hit C1, stop negging and build rapport.
  • Routines without structure. Memorized material with no sense of sequence gives sporadic results.
  • Turning into a robot. Wygant used “PUA” as a jab at routine-running clones. If you sound recited, she can tell. Practice material until it feels like your own story.
  • Over-giving. Full attention, constant leaning in, dumping your life story. Wygant’s fix: “Less is more.”
  • Rushing LMR. Last-minute resistance is normal. Slow down, add comfort, respect her pace. Pressure is not part of the method, and a clear no ends it.

Is Mystery’s Pickup Still Relevant Today?

Pickup artistry did not stop with the VH1 era, but it evolved, and much of that evolution was a reaction to Mystery. Inner-game teachers pushed back on canned lines. Gambler’s Stealth Attraction drops overt DHVs (demonstrations of higher value) and compliments entirely, arguing that bragging reads as validation-seeking and that letting her discover good things about you builds more intrigue. Vin DiCarlo calibrates the whole sequence to her type rather than running one script for everyone. Strauss’s later Annihilation Method keeps Mystery’s sequential spine but adds real-time calibration waypoints such as the takeaway.

So what survives from the Mystery how to be a pickup artist playbook? More than its critics admit:

  • The sequence. Nearly every school still runs open, attract, connect, escalate, close. Mystery’s naming of it is why most men think in stages at all.
  • Group dynamics. Opening the circle, winning the friends and getting permission to isolate still works in any bar or party.
  • Time constraints and non-neediness. Signaling you won’t overstay lowers her guard everywhere, including day game and messages.
  • Calibration on IOIs. Moving forward only on her signals is both effective and the respectful way to play.

What has aged: heavy peacocking, magic tricks for strangers and lines delivered word for word. Take the architecture and fill it with your own stories. DeAngelo framed it well: “style” is the individual material you put in each phase, while the phases themselves stay fixed.

Questions men ask

FAQ

Is pick up artist still a thing?

Yes, though it looks different. The forums and big seminar companies of the 2000s have faded, and much of the community now organizes through group chats and local wing networks. What lasted is the core teaching: approach practice, inner game, reading her signals and moving through attraction, comfort and escalation in order. Canned routines matter less now. Calibration and honest intent matter more.

Where can I watch The Pickup Artist season 1?

The Pick Up Artist aired on VH1 from 2007 to 2008, with Mystery coaching a group of inexperienced men through weekly challenges. Season 1 has been listed on Amazon Prime Video for purchase or streaming, but availability changes by region and over time. Check your streaming service or digital store listings for the current options before paying for anything.

Is The Game by Neil Strauss true?

Strauss wrote The Game as a first-person nonfiction account of his years inside the seduction community, including living at Project Hollywood with Mystery. He presents it as his real experience, though like any memoir it is told from his angle, with scenes compressed and shaped for story. Read the field scenes as one practitioner's experience, not as guaranteed outcomes.

How do you become a PUA?

Learn a structure first, such as Mystery's attract, comfort, seduce sequence, so you know what each stage is for. Then get reps: short daily practice sessions, approaching groups, logging which waypoint each interaction reached. Work on inner game alongside, because competence breeds confidence. Read her indicators of interest before moving forward, and treat any clear no as the end of that interaction.

What is the Mystery Method in simple terms?

It is a nine-phase courtship model grouped into three stages: Attraction, Comfort and Seduction. You open the whole group, demonstrate higher value, let her qualify herself, isolate her, then build hours of comfort and touch before any seduction. The core rule is sequence. Skip ahead and she gets buyer's remorse. Stall in comfort and you land in the friend zone.
