The Mystery Method by Mystery: The 9 Phases Explained
The Mystery Method by Mystery explained: who Erik von Markovik is, the nine A-C-S phases, how to run a set step by step, and the mistakes that kill it.

The Mystery Method by Mystery is the pickup system that turned a stage magician’s field notes into the seduction community’s first complete map of courtship. Erik von Markovik, the Canadian illusionist known as Mystery, split every interaction into three stages and nine phases and insisted you run them in order. Much of the vocabulary men use in the community today came from him or spread through him: sets, openers, DHVs, negs, kino, LMR.
This piece covers who Mystery is, what the model actually says, how to run a set with it phase by phase, what a full interaction looks like, and the sequencing errors that wreck most attempts. If you are new to the scene, the primer on what a PUA is and how the method works gives you the wider context first.
What Is the Mystery Method by Mystery?
At its core, the Mystery Method by Mystery is a linear model of courtship. It has three stages, and each one is the precondition for the next:
- Attract: raise your value so she notices you and wants you.
- Comfort: build trust, connection and physical comfort.
- Seduce: mutual escalation toward sex, once there is enough comfort and enough privacy.
Each stage has its own beginning, middle and end, which gives nine phases in total. Mystery calls the whole structure the M3 Model (Mystery Method Model).
The magic background shows everywhere. A “set” (the group of people you approach) is performer’s language. Demonstrations, props and routines feel like an act because they partly are one. Mystery taught classroom seminars under the name Social Dynamics. Tyler Durden and Papa later broke away and built Real Social Dynamics around in-field workshops.
Why sequence is the whole point
Mystery argues that routines on their own produce sporadic results. Knowing a clever opener won’t make a beautiful woman fall for you. The opener has to sit inside a structure that moves her from curiosity to trust to arousal. He called that structure the Magic Bullets system, and his advice was blunt: learn the sequence first, then plug routines from the Routines Book into it.
Underneath the structure sits an evolutionary story. Mystery’s handbook frames attraction in terms of survival and replication value. A man’s attraction switches respond mostly to youth and health cues. A woman’s respond mostly to signs that a man has social value, leads and can protect. When you first walk up, you have shown none of that. As Mystery puts it to students, she assumes you are just “the next guy.” The early phases exist to change that.
The model also comes with a clock. The usual run from meeting to sex is 4 to 10 hours of accumulated interaction time, about 7 on average. That time is spread across the venue, moves to other spots and later dates. Few men expect the method to be that patient.
Who Is Mystery? Erik von Markovik and His Books
Mystery was born Erik James Horvat-Marković in Toronto on September 24, 1971. He used Erik von Markovik as a stage name for his illusionist shows and later made it his legal name. The Mystery character came out of his late-1990s mentalist act, Natural Magic, and doubled as his username on early seduction forums. He reached a wide audience through Neil Strauss’s The Game, where he is Style’s mentor and housemate at Project Hollywood, and later hosted VH1’s The Pickup Artist.
The written version of the Mystery Method by Mystery is spread across several books:
| Year | Title | What it gives you |
|---|---|---|
| 2005 | The Venusian Arts Handbook | The original e-book manual of the M3 Model, with the nine phases, the comfort-kissing rules and the evolutionary theory |
| 2006 | The Mystery Method: How to Get Beautiful Women Into Bed (with Chris Odom) | The mainstream, cleaned-up presentation of the model for a general audience |
| 2008 | Revelation (with Chris Odom and James Matador) | A later expansion of the system |
| 2010 | The Pickup Artist: The New and Improved Art of Seduction (with Chris Odom and Neil Strauss) | An updated version tied to the TV era |
Alongside these, Magic Bullets and the Routines Book are the companion manuals: structure first, material second. For a full reading order, see our breakdown of the Mystery Method books and what each teaches.
The Mystery Method book is still sold in print, as an ebook and as an audiobook. Most PDFs floating around are unauthorized copies, so buy a legitimate edition or borrow one from a library. In recent years Mystery’s public output has moved away from field instruction. In 2026 he released an ebook about an AI companion that drew press attention. For learning the method, the books above are what matters.

The M3 Model: Nine Phases From Open to Sex
Here is the full map of the Mystery Method by Mystery, following the Venusian Arts Handbook.
Attract (A1-A3)
- A1, Open: approach and open the set. Carry the interaction until you hit the Social Hook Point, the moment the group wants you to stay.
- A2, Female-to-Male interest: demonstrate higher value (DHV: stories, skills and social proof that show you’re a high-status man) until she gives indicators of interest (IOIs: signs like asking your name, touching you or re-engaging when you turn away).
- A3, Male-to-Female interest: bait her to chase you, then reward her with your own interest. This is where she qualifies herself to you on something beyond looks.
Comfort (C1-C3)
- C1, Conversation and rapport: drop the teasing and talk properly.
- C2, Connection: shared vibe, deeper kino (touch). Kissing can happen here.
- C3, Intimacy and trust: deepen trust and move toward a place where sex is possible.
Seduce (S1-S3)
- S1, Foreplay.
- S2, Last-minute resistance (LMR): her hesitation just before sex. Mystery and DeAngelo both treat it as an expected phase, not a rejection.
- S3, Sex.
One detail separates men who read the handbook from those who skimmed it. Mystery distinguishes comfort kissing from foreplay. Comfort kissing is short, usually under 30 seconds, and builds connection. Wait too long to kiss her and she loses interest. Foreplay belongs only in the seduction stage, once comfort and privacy are both in place. He even advises slowing things down yourself if making out turns into foreplay in a bar, telling her it’s not the right time or place.
The nine phases you’ll hear in David DeAngelo’s Mastery program are the same skeleton with different labels:
| Mystery (Venusian Arts) | DeAngelo’s nine phases | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| A1 Open | 1. Open the group | Same: her social circle, not just her |
| A2 Female-to-Male | 2. Female-to-male attraction | Same goal: she gets attracted first |
| A3 Male-to-Female | 3. Male-to-female attraction / qualify | DeAngelo stresses qualities beyond looks |
| C1-C3 | 4-6. Comfort 1, 2, 3 | Number close in C1, hand-holding in C2, kissing in C3; about six hours total |
| S1-S3 | 7. Seduction, 8. LMR, 9. Sex | Roughly thirty minutes of arousal; LMR handled with time and reassurance |
DeAngelo also points out that “style” is the individual material you use to fill each phase. The phases themselves are fixed.
How to Run a Set With the Mystery Method, Step by Step
Mystery expanded his opening game into a 13-step format, recorded in The Game. Below it’s condensed into a working sequence, with his own instructions on approaching groups folded in.
- Approach while still moving, over the shoulder. Coming in straight-on feels confrontational. Mystery’s reason: “You’re telegraphing too much interest just by your presence.” Smile on entry and go within about three seconds, before your head talks you out of it. Our guide to approaching without freezing covers that drill.
- Open the whole group with a stacked opener. An opener is your first line. Stacking means having a second and third ready so the conversation never stalls in the first minute. Opinion openers work well: “Hey guys, quick opinion on something...”
- Give a time constraint within 15 seconds. “I can only stay a second, I’ve got my friends here.” It tells the group you won’t trap them, and their shields drop.
- Skip the vagrant’s opener. No “sorry to bother you,” no “can I ask you something?” Excusing yourself and asking permission to talk sinks your value immediately.
- Win the group, not the target. This is group theory: attractive women are rarely alone, so you win over the men and the obstacles first. Give the target little attention for now.
- Neg her once, lightly. A neg is a playful, ambiguous tease that signals you aren’t dazzled by her looks. It should get a laugh from the group, not wound anyone. If you’re unsure where teasing ends, read our piece on negging versus teasing.
- Convey personality to the group. Stories, a magic trick, a prop, humor. Peacocking (one standout item of clothing) gives people something to comment on. The Routines Book is firm on delivery: “If you’re not interested in what you’re talking about, there’s no chance anyone else will be either.” Personalize your stories to what you actually care about.
- Ask how everyone knows each other. If a guy turns out to be her boyfriend, gauge how serious it is and eject politely if needed.
- Get the group’s permission and isolate. “I’ve sort of been alienating your friend, mind if I talk to her for a minute?” Sitting next to her counts as a mini-isolation. Lead her by the hand as a kino test and watch whether she comes easily.
- Demonstrate and qualify. Run a demonstration (Mystery used rune readings and ESP tests), then a qualifying line such as “Beauty is common, but what’s rare is a great energy...”
- Stop talking. If she fills the silence with “So...?”, that’s an IOI. She is now investing.
- Close. If her signals are strong, kiss-close: “Would you like to kiss me?” Otherwise set a time constraint and take her number. See our first kiss tips for reading the moment.
Calibration cues
- She turns her body toward you and asks questions: attraction is building. Keep demonstrating, don’t jump to rapport yet.
- She keeps trying to re-enter the conversation: good sign. Mystery would neg her once more and hold back his attention a little longer.
- She’s with one friend (a two-set): don’t isolate. DeAngelo warns the friend will pull her away. Keep them together and keep the friend entertained.
- She goes flat, looks away or steps back: no hook. Thank them and leave gracefully.

A Worked Example: One Set Through the Model
This is an illustration, not a field report. It shows how the Mystery Method by Mystery maps onto a real night out.
A three-set at a bar: two women and a man. You walk past, half-turn and open over your shoulder.
You: Guys, quick opinion before I head back to my friends. Is it weird to bring a guitar to a house party?
Guy: Depends if you can play.
You: That’s the real question. My buddy can’t, and he brings it anyway.
That’s A1: open, time constraint, a little story. You talk mostly to the guy. The target makes a sarcastic comment; you grin and tell the group, “She’s the troublemaker, isn’t she?” They laugh. That’s your one neg. You tell a short travel story to everyone. She asks where you’re from. You dodge playfully the first time (“Guess.”), then give a straight answer when she asks again. Strauss’s rule is to answer honestly by the second or third ask.
She’s now leaning in, touching your arm and asking follow-up questions. You’re in A2. You ask how everyone knows each other: they’re coworkers. You turn to the guy: “I’ve been ignoring your friend, mind if I steal her for two minutes?” He shrugs. You sit with her and repeat the time constraint.
A3: you ask what she’s into besides work. She mentions she taught herself Portuguese for a trip. You reward that: “That’s rare. Most people talk about doing that and never start.” Then silence. She says, “So... what about you?” She’s chasing.
C1: the teasing stops. Real conversation, slower and quieter. After ten minutes you say your friends are leaving, take her number and suggest a specific plan for later in the week. The comfort hours that follow happen on that date and the next, with hand-holding, a kiss, and escalation only as fast as her responses invite. Our first date tips pick up from there.
Common Mistakes and Sticking Points
A sticking point is the place your interactions reliably die. The value of the Mystery Method by Mystery is that it names them. Mystery’s diagnostic overlay identifies four ways men break the sequence.
The four sequencing errors
- The Seducer (Seduction first): starts at the end, with sexual talk or touch before any attraction. Mystery calls it a “fool’s mate,” a crude early checkmate attempt experienced women see coming.
- The Nice Guy (Comfort first): builds rapport before attraction exists. She’s been approached by “the next guy” too many times, and her protection shield goes up.
- The Player (Attraction without comfort): skips the middle and goes straight to sex. The result is buyer’s remorse: she regrets it, flakes and avoids him.
- The Friend (Attraction and comfort only): builds both but never escalates. DeAngelo calls him the girlfriend, stuck with LJBF (“let’s just be friends”). His cutoff: “seven hours is really a good cutoff point,” anywhere between four and ten. If that’s you, our guide on getting out of the friend zone covers the fix.
Other sticking points and how they’re fixed
- Moving phases before her signals do. No comfort until IOIs confirm attraction, no seduction until comfort is real. Let her behavior advance the phase, not your impatience.
- Negging after attraction is built. In C1 the negs stop. Teasing a woman who already likes you reads as insecurity.
- Gaming the target instead of the group. Win the friends, then ask permission. A group that likes you will hand her over; a group you ignored will pull her away.
- A head full of routines and no structure. Mystery’s own diagnosis of sporadic results. Learn the phases before you learn more lines.
- Treating LMR as a wall to push through. It’s a phase: slow down, add comfort, reassure her and respect her pace. If she says no or loses interest, it ends there. Pressure produces exactly the buyer’s remorse the model is built to prevent.
- Not enough reps. DeAngelo: “The club is your dojo.” He puts the number at about 250 approaches before the skill set is reliable.
Does the Mystery Method Still Work? Strengths and Limits
The common critique is that the Mystery Method by Mystery is a script. It works, critics say, but it isn’t sustainable, because you’re performing a character instead of being one. There’s truth in that. A man running memorized routines and rune readings forever is renting a personality.
The community’s answer isn’t to throw out the model. It is to separate the map from the material:
- The sequence holds up. Attract before comfort, comfort before seduction. Nearly every later system keeps that spine. Strauss’s Annihilation Method still runs opener, breaking into the group, demonstrating value, a calibration checkpoint, rapport and close.
- The routines are training wheels. They solve “what do I say” while your nerves are loud. Over time you replace them with your own stories and humor, filling each phase with what DeAngelo calls your style.
- Strauss’s four takeaways from Mystery’s training translate the method into habits: have a plan, have a gimmick or at least a prop, have stories, and treat it all as a game.
- Later programs filled the gaps. Some trainings call The Game and Mystery’s method foundational but say they lack a true step-by-step procedure, and they set out to supply one.
The honest trade-off: the model is excellent at night-game group dynamics and as a diagnostic tool. It is weaker as a guide to who you become once the scripts fall away. Use it to find your sticking point, then build the inner game and congruence that let the phases happen without a script. Mystery and intrigue, leading and connection all grow from there. Questions men ask
FAQ
Who is the Mystery Method guy?
The Mystery Method guy is Erik von Markovik, a Canadian illusionist from Toronto who performs as Mystery. He built the M3 Model of courtship (Attract, Comfort, Seduce), taught it in seminars, and wrote The Venusian Arts Handbook and The Mystery Method. He became widely known as Neil Strauss's mentor in The Game and as host of VH1's The Pickup Artist.
What happened to PUA Mystery?
After The Game and his VH1 show, Mystery kept publishing, including Revelation and The Pickup Artist with co-authors. His company's instructors later went in their own directions, and his public output moved away from field teaching. In 2026 he released an ebook about an AI companion, which drew press coverage. His original nine-phase model is still widely taught in the community.
What is the Mystery Method?
The Mystery Method is a linear system for meeting and seducing women. It moves through three stages, Attract, Comfort and Seduce, each split into three phases (A1 to S3). You open the group rather than the target, demonstrate higher value, isolate her, build hours of comfort and kino, then escalate only when she is receptive. Running the phases out of order is treated as the main cause of failure.
How old is PUA Mystery?
Mystery, born Erik James Horvat-Marković on September 24, 1971, in Toronto, is 55 as of late 2026. He took the name Erik von Markovik as a stage name for his illusionist shows and later made it his legal name. The Mystery character grew out of his mentalist act in the late 1990s and his username on early seduction forums.
Is there a Mystery Method PDF?
The Mystery Method: How to Get Beautiful Women Into Bed is sold in print, as an ebook and as an audiobook. The Venusian Arts Handbook was originally released as an e-book. Most free PDFs circulating online are unauthorized copies. Buy a legitimate edition or borrow one from a library. The book is worth owning, because you will reread the phase chapters many times as your sticking points change.
